The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. The White House relented after months of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.
Expedited Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.
Citizens have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”
Presidential Signature
The bill next will be sent to the president for his signature. He stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.
Though the president has for months dismissed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would sign the measure if it comes to him.
Reaction
Democrats, along with victims and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, cheered after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who stated he was concerned the measure would make public personal information of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
