Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz about the recent awards show has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
